This scene shows a rescue that occurred at the height of the storm at Riverside and Summit streets. Deputy Fire Chief Frank Moore, white coat and waist-deep in flood water, and Battalion Chief Walter Joy, directly ahead of him, direct a rescue operation of three stranded Waterbury firemen. Private William O'Neill, on the fence post, guides Private George Brown from the pole across the raging current. The house at left was later swept away.
