Waterbury, CT-08 June 2012-060812CM01-  Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Dr. Daisy Cocco De Filippis, President of the Naugatuck Valley Community College share a laugh during an announcement of the GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) Grant Awards at the Technology Hall Atrium inside the Naugatuck Valley Community College Friday afternoon in Waterbury.  The city of Waterbury is receiving a $11.2 million in GEAR UP funding from the State of Connecticut.  GEAR UP  is a federally-funded discretionary grant program designed to significantly increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in college.  NVCC will serve as fiduciary for Waterbury's grant  award.  Funding was also awarded to the city of New Haven to partner with Southern Connecticut State University and the city of East Hartford to  partner with Manchester Community College in these efforts.   -Info taken from Reporter Mike Puffer.
