Winsted Civil Defense volunteers and firemen battled to save this bridge over a tributary of the Still River near the municipal sewage disposal plant on October 15, 1955. Debris had become lodged against the center pier of the structure erected temporarily after the August 19th flood. The pressure of the water was so great that the two men standing on the debris in the stream were not able to budge it until a winch from an Army vehicle was hooked into it with the cable the men on the span are holding.
