THOMASTON, CT, 16 NOV 11-111611AJ01- A trip to Ponte's Torringford Package store on Wednesday evening turned out to be an adventure for Nick Beverly of Torrington. Beverly, when he returned to his 1997 Oldsmobile, found his car on fire. The light blue car was spewing a pungent plastic smelling smoke from beneath the hood. Beverley said that he ran back into the store to find a fire extinguisher and returned with water in an attempt to quell the growing flames. In the meantime a passerby pushed the car into the middle of the parking lot, which was where firefighters found the car with flames illuminating the undercarriage. Firefighters used a fire hose attached to a tanker to flood the flames while raising the hood only enough to spray water on the engine. The fire was under control and the hoses were rolled up about 10 minutes after the 8:16 p.m. call. The cause of the blaze was unknown Wednesday night. Alec Johnson / Republican-American
