WATERBURY -- July 8, 2015 -- 07_NEW_070815MDP03 -- WATERBURY ñ A payloader moves dirt as part of the project to tear down the old ramp parking garage on Prospect Street Tuesday. A group of city and state officials gathered there in the morning to mark the event, with Mayor Neil M. O'Leary praising the multi-million-dollar state Waterbury Next project that supported the deconstruction. O'Leary said it hasn't been determined what use the city will make of the space, although others strongly suggested it would work well as parking for the nearby Basilica of the Immaculate Conception. The Rev. Christopher Ford, newly appointed rector of the basilica, joked with the small crowd gathered that this was the first time in his 28 years as a priest that he's blessed a demolition site.
