WATERBURY, CT- 20 July 2013 071913AP02- Retired Colonel John Chiarelle, Chairman of the Waterbury Veteran Memorial Committee thanks senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal for supporting a long awaited resolution to honor Lieutenant Reverend Thomas M. Conway. Conway, a Waterbury hero, perished after four days of swimming through shark-infested waters to offer fellow sailors prayer and encouragement. "One man can uplift and inspire," said Sen. Blumenthal, "A man like Thomas Conway." Sen. Murphy hopes to have the resolution signed by every living survivor of the USS Indianapolis. "We're going to fight and we're going to win for Thomas Conway." says Blumenthal. After listening to the heroical last days of Conway Mayor O'Leary stepped up and said that he would like to build a monument to honor Conway somewhere to honor the man who went beyond the call of duty and died only the day before rescue came. .
